The sandal is considered to be the oldest kind of footwear, coming from the ancient years.  It leaves the foot more uncovered than all other shoes. [MORE...]

Rubber sole shoes that are soft to walk on, regardless of design or manufacturing material, are called sneakers.  The design of these shoes is more. [MORE...]

This is the type of shoe that covers the foot from toe-to-calf, while the height is determined by personal choice, fashion trends, etc. [MORE...]

A big chapter on shoe design is the actions that need to be taken, so that our initial pattern can be scaled up and down and different shoe sizes. [MORE...]

The Art of Shoe Design

This book is written by Vangelis Doukakis with the aim of transferring the shoe design knowledge he acquired, during approximately forty years of factory production process.

It is created entirely by himself, by using design, photo editing and paging software.

Looking at the book cover, in addition to the synthesis he has created, the drawing diagrams, the digital photos and the designs, we can see one of his painting, in the lower left part.

This artwork was carefully selected to remind us of his artistic origin.

FAQ about SHOE DESIGN

The flip flop last has an approximate 8mm wide groove, from the toe up to the beginning of the instep. In general, the flip flop bottom is wider than that of the sandal, except for the designs that have straps perpendicular to the toes, in order to keep the foot stable. Therefore, we can make sandals on a flip flop last, but not the other way around.

A.      If this is happens when the pump is already lasted, then the pattern is problematic as the main axis has not been placed properly, meaning that the pump must be tighter on the last.
B.      If the problem exists after the pump comes out of the last, this means that the cut was made with a material that is not stable along the length, tapes may not have been inserted in the seam and the pattern is small along its length.
C.      In case that the problem arises after the nailing of the heel, then there is a big gap in the center of the heel and we have to fill it with some hard material. There is also the case that the screw during the nailing has distorted the metal reinforcement of the bottom.
D.     If the problem arises only on the foot, a metal reinforcement must be placed -if there is no any- on the bottom.  If the reinforcement is already there, it should be made harder by making the correct alignment with the heel height.

Once it's done, it's basically unfixable. In order to avoid the same mistake in the future, we need to check again if the height of the heel is correct or the pattern is short.  A soft and flexible bottom may be responsible but with the least chances.

No! There is a different last for every type of shoe.   In my book there are detailed tables that illustrate the thickness and shape for each type. To economize and even break the rules a little, we could use the pump last and by placing some commercially available plastic pieces on the back of the heel and on the instep and bring the line further out, we can make zipper boots and sneakers with the same last.
